Separate hotel items from en-route items
Clothes, wash items and what is needed for the next night can be one layer; a rain layer, warm layer, spare child clothing or a small number of confirmed same-day items can be another. That avoids opening every case at a service stop, restaurant or short break for one item.
Valuables, documents and personal health-related items should not lose appropriate care because luggage is layered. Each family can keep its own method; the important part is that the responsible person knows what cannot be left unattended.
Give each large item an owner and an order
With people and cases, mark each large item for its owner or room and say which comes down first and which stays aboard before checking in. The label can be simple and should not reveal unnecessary sensitive information.
At the hotel, companions check items against the list. Do not turn unloading into the driver searching alone or everyone crowding around the boot. Parking, unloading and waiting all follow that day's safety conditions and provider arrangement.
Easy access never outranks safety
Frequently needed items can sit in a reasonably reachable place while doors, aisles, belts and rear visibility remain clear. Whether soft bags, hard cases and fragile items can stack or be secured depends on the vehicle, actual load and the driver's judgement.
Do not place cases temporarily on seats, in footwells or in an aisle simply because they may be needed next. Do not search the boot or rearrange stacks while moving; make adjustments only after safely parking.
Reset lightly at each hotel change
After check-in, return dirty clothes, wet items, charging gear and next-day items to their places, and clear needless packaging and receipts. Rebuilding the three layers for the actual next day is easier than letting luggage become less organised with every stop.
If something is missing, first check its last room, vehicle location and companion handover, then ask the hotel or provider for appropriate help. Do not skip checks to save time or have anyone return alone through an unsafe area to retrieve something.
